8.9 inch Asus T91MT reviewed – good, but still quite a bunch of cons

Remember that i reviewed an early version of the 10 inch Asus T101MT a couple of weeks ago? Well, Asus has a similar device on the market for quite a while, the 8.9 inch Asus T91MT tablet netbook, and Peter at netbooked.net got his hands on one of these and gave it a spin, resulting in a pretty thorough review.

Here are the things he likes about the T91MT EEE PC:

  • there’s a resistive multi-touch display which is pretty responsive and precise (unlike the one on the sample T101MT, that left me a really poor impression). There’s a video below showing you how you can take notes with the stylus and it seems to work pretty smooth and accurate
  • it is pretty small and compact, plus since the hardware is fanless, it is also quiet
  • battery life is around 4-5 hours, which is just decent (not bad, not that good either)
  • can play 720p video, because of the latest Flash player support for hardware acceleration on the Z520 processor + GMA 500 graphics platform
  • there are 2 SD card slots to extend the limited storage space (16 or 32 GB)

So, there are quite a couple of interesting features, but hold on for the not so like-able parts:

  • due to the LCD display, viewing angles are not that great and you will be bothered when trying to read books or use the gadget in tablet mode, as you’ll always have to keep it perpendicular to your viewing angle
  • overall performance is sluggish sometimes
  • there’s an SSD drive inside, but a very slow one and only only offers up to 32 GB storage space
  • it comes with an integrated TV-tuner that works pretty badly (but I believe this feature will only be offered for the Japanese version tested in here, it’s not available in the US or Europe)
  • battery is non-removable and you can’t perform upgrades (except for memory) without voiding warranty

At the moment, the Asus T91MT is available in the US in black and white, with a list price of $499. But you can get it from Amazon for only $484 /w Free delivery included. Plus, you can see the pics and read the reviews previous buyers gave to it.

Also, please check Peter’s review which I absolutely recommend. You’ll find there more videos on the benefits of having a touch-display and how easy that is to use in daily activities.
