A couple of netbooks and nettops reviewed

More of the netbooks and nettops launched in the first month of this year got on review benches all over the world, so here’s a quick round-up of the most important reviews spotted in the last week.

First there’s the Alienware M11x, the gaming 11.6 portable device that is not actually a netbook, because of its specs and its hefty price tag. But is however a very very good machine, as all the reviewers loved it. All in one, it’s the best in its class in terms of multimedia performance. And while it sacrifices portability somehow because it weighs 4.5 pounds and only offers around 2-4 hours of battery life (depending on the activity), the M11x is indeed quite a mini-laptop. You can read more in the reviews from IGN or Hardware Heaven .

Then, there’s the Samsung N150 , the entry-level Samsung netbook from the new PineTrail equipped class and the cheapest, available on Amazon for $349. Overall a decent device that doesn’t excel in any particularly aspect. Comes with a matte display so it can be used outside and a fair battery life (around 6-7 hours in practice), but that cramped keyboard Samsung uses is really annoying. There’s also the Asus Eee Box EB1501, the compact nettop with dual-core ATOM, Nvidia ION graphics and very good performance levels for a desktop-replacement meant for regular users. So while the overall device is appreciated and comes with plenty of strong points, it is a little bit expensive for a nettop (around $460 in the US). But, considering how tiny it is, I do think this Asus Eee Box is a very nice pick in its class. More on the detailed review on Netbooked.

And there’s the Asus EEE PC 1201T, the 12 inch Seashell netbook from netbook built on an AMD platform. Similar to the other laptops in the 1201XX series, this one packs an AMD Neo MV-40 CPU and ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics  and provides a mixe-up in performance (plays 1080p content but no 720p or higher Flash videos). So, while not as good as the 1201N (with Nvidia Ion graphics), it’s better than the 1201HA with standard Atom N280 config. However, the bad part comes with battery life, as the power-hungry AMD platform only allows up to 2.5 hours of life. More on the review on Blogeee.

That’s it for now. But stay tuned, there will definitely be more reviews for interesting netbooks and nettops in the near future.
