Acer Aspire One 522 emerged, with powerful AMD Ontario inside

With touch tablets hitting the market, there were few news on netbooks available lately. However, details about a new Acer Aspire One D522 emerged these last days and this mini laptop looks like quite a piece of machinery.

Not much has changed on the outside from the previous 10 inch Acer lines, there’s still the same body saw on the D260 or D255, with the sleek chassis and glossy finish. Still, there’s a new textured trackpad (probably because the older one felt unresponsive sometimes) and a new green color for the exterior (and not the lime one found on the Aspire One Happy).

The real goodies lie inside. This is in fact one of the first devices announced on the new AMD Fusion platform, bringing an Ontario architecture. Like we’ve told you before, the Ontario line does not feature a CPU, but an unit called APU (accelerated processing unit), merging together an x86 CPU and a DirecX11 capable GPU (Radeon 6250). The version to be found on the AOD522, called C-50 is a dual-core APU clocked at 1GHz and with a 9W TDP.

Although benchmarks of the new AMD Fusion platform are still scarce, this platform is supposed to bring to 10 inchers performances way superior to the ones of the current Intel Atom lines, while being able to compete with them in terms of energy efficiency. The Aspire One D522 will be able to handle HD content and even benefits from a 10 inch 1280 x 720p display (HD ready) and an HDMI port for outputting content on a bigger screen.

Details about availability and pricing are still unknown for the AOD522, but we do know that battery life is rated at around 6 hours, which is 2 fewer than the Atom N550 equipped Acer D255. So perhaps the AMD platform still can’t compete with the Atoms in terms of battery life, but giving the extra performance which will make this mini notebook more versatile and overall snappier in everyday tasks, I for one can deal with the reduced lower battery life (if indeed this Acer will live to that promised autonomy).

That it for now, but stay tuned, more details about the Acer Aspire One D522 and other AMD powered netbooks will be available here on the site in the near future.
