Acer Iconia Tab W500 hands on and first look at MWC

The Acer Iconia Tab W500 is one of the tablets Acer introduced during MWC. There were three of them, the other ones running on Android, and coming in the 7 and 10 inch factors.

This tablet here is powered by an Ontario C-50 processor, has a 1280 x 800 resolution display and Radeon HD graphics, which can deliver HD playback and is compatible with DirectX 11. If you’re still wondering about what this one is able to do, we bring a fresh hands on video with the slate, straight from the Mobile World Convention in Barcelona.

As you can see, the tablet runs Windows 7 and comes with a docking station, which is starting to be almost a standard for 10 inch tablets. The reason for this is that you can use it also a netbook and bring all your computing- both professional and entertainment- on a single, portable device. You can easily connect or disconnect the tablet from the docking station by pushing the button below the tablet.

The bezel of the tablet is bigger than what we get on many tablets, but considering the size, you need a pretty big area for grabbing it, without activating stuff on screen. The tablet is also rather thick, so my guess is that it’s not meant as a device for constant push and pull, but it’s more of a solution at home or at the office.

The screen supports 4 touch points, which is more than enough for some gaming and such stuff, but if you’re a keyboard kind of user, you won’t even use the feature too much. Oh, the keyboard also has a track button in the middle. There’s no touchpad, but under the space bar there are a couple of buttons, probably for left and right mouse and scroll.

For now, there’s no info about availability or pricing, but we suspect that the Android tablets will be the first ones to be released, the first one around April. My guess is the W500 gets a Q2 release date and will come with a decent price, as it’s not packing a high end CPU. Stay tuned for the hands on video below.

I think the Netbook is on borrowed time.Saw a photo of an Asus concept 10″ tablet thaT has a slide out keyboard and the screen goes up on a 45 degree angle.in T3 magazine(Australian version). My local netbook supplier looked at this thing and said “that’s a netbook killer”.

Andrew, for me, netbooks are still better. There’s a lot of things you can do on a windows device than on an Android one. For now, at least. I’m sure tablets are bound to kick ass in the near future, but the software is not just there yet. Not for me at least…
