Acer D257 – new 10 inch netbook, quiet on details for now

After tablets, Acer decided it’s time for a 10 inch netbook and they let people know about their new offspring, named Aspire One D257. If we’re to be mean, we could say it’s just another Intel Atom single processor with 1 GB of RAM swamp creature, but Acer can do a lot better, so my money would  be on a dual core processor, picked between AMD Fusion and the new line of dual core processors from Intel.

What we do know about the netbook is that it has one of the thinnest cases around, being less than an inch thick. Also, the power button was incorporated in the hinge, probably in order to save some space or have better on/off timings when closing the lid.

Other info say that the device will be able to boot from both Android and Windows 7 Starter Edition, but this is all familiar territory for Acer netbooks, as older netbooks were doing it.

Well, not everywhere, as in the US netbooks don’t come with Android pre installed. The battery is said to run for about 8 hours on a single charge (Ontario C-50 anyone?), will have blue tooth and Wifi and will come in three color options, including aquamarine, dark chocolate and seashell white.

The netbook will also pack the trick with the screen being able to tilt back to 180 degrees, so we can only hope that the display will not lose colors when not looking straight at it (considering that the screen will basically stand on the table like a tablet, we might expect IPS technology like in some slates).

Also available on the device there are three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, ethernet, SD card multi reader, mic and headphone jack, while the total weight is 2.2 pounds with the battery strapped. If you’re a sucker for the Italian language, check the video below. It contains all we said above, but it comes from an Italian girl. Enjoy.

I like the Acer press release , the emphasis being on style rather than function.

I found it interesting that in none of the you tube videos do we see a machine actually running (this was also commented on by ) but then what the video’s do show is how glossy and highly reflective the screen is, along with the high gloss top cover which rapidly shows fingerprints (just like the AO.Happy).

I suspect that the D257 will follow the D250/255/Happy ranges in specifications and limitations, specifically: Bluetooth will not be provided as standard – and models with it will only be available in a few countries. There will probably not be a version with 3G mobile broadband built-in given 3G is absent from the press release and all other articles I’ve googled.

So whilst it does look good it wonn’t deliver the same level of convienence and usability as similarly priced tablets, which is a real shame as netbooks (ie. screen and keyboard usable for typing more than a few words) do satisfy a real need for IT on the move but only if the connectivity is there …

For some reason the URL’s were omitted from my previous post. The two URL’s are:

Aside: If you are looking for a D250 model with built-in Bluetooth and 3G then the model you are looking for is: AOD255-N55DQGkk ( LU.SDU0D.003 ) unfortunately this is only available in Czech localisation; however Acer original keyboards for other locales (such as the UK) are available at reasonable prices – however do remember to change the locale the very first time you start Windows 7 …
