AMD Nile is here, with better performance and autonomy

While waiting for the Bobcat architecture to be revealed last year, AMD officially introduced the Nile line, meant to tackle Intel’s ATOM processors on netbooks this year. In fact, we already saw the Nile architecture on some recently announced devices, most of them from Acer, like the Aspire One 521 .

Now, we also have more official details from AMD about this line. Shortly, it is expected to offer 22% increase in overall performance over the previous Congo platform, 33% better graphic performances and increased battery life. The new AMDs won’t still be able to face the AMDs in terms of autonomy, but will provide 6-8 hours on a 6 Cell battery, which is decent. Especially if we consider the fact that these AMDs will be significantly better in everyday tasks and multimedia applications.

Actually, AMD prepares an entire series of CPUs on this new line (with improved graphics), you can see details about each of them in the picture below.

What’s important to know is that most of them can play 1080p content, come with HDMI output and support DirectX 11. Of course, for now these processors haven’t been put to proper testing and only then we should see what are they capable of when faced with the direct competitors from Intel.

My prediction would be that they will still suffer in terms of battery life and platform built on them will get quite hot and noisy. This is based on my experience with AMD processors in these last years.

Anyway, it’s good to have AMD involved deeply in the netbooks segment, because as I said before, competition brings improvements.
