Android 3.0 works on Dell Streak

This is an oddity. First, we had the news that Android Honeycomb won’t run on devices without a dual core processor and then we found out that some developers made it possible to run the OS on the Nook Color.

It was mainly an e-book reader with a dream and was turned into one of the cheapest 3.0 tablets out there. Now we have some other rather disturbing info about another substandard device running 3.0.

Alltouchtablet.com says that a mighty developer going by the name of DJ_Steve came up with a way of mixing together the Dell Streak and Honeycomb. The Streak is a 5 inch device which goes around mainly as a smart phone, but has some strong tablet features. Indeed, it falls short on screen size and I really don’t know how Honeycomb will work on it. The 3.0 version was built in mind with the idea that the tablets running it will have big screens, where the touch based apps and software may run at will.

What you can do with it on a 5 inch display is a little beyond my understanding, but the simple fact that it will run on it is amazing. Unlike the 7 inch version present in the US, the 5 inch version has mobile and voice broadband data, and came out initially powered by Android 1.6. The move made the phone feel a little out dated, but soon after got a 2.2 upgrade.

Under the hood there’s a Scorpion 1 GHZ processor, it has an accelerometer, a 5 MP video camera, 512 MB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and room for another 32 GB SD card, 3G, WiFi, blue tooth and USB, amongst others. Under current circumstances, the hybrid smart phone-tablet that the Streak is sounds like a reasonable alternative to expensive Android 3.0 tablets like the Xoom tablet, but we first have to see how the port works out on the long term.
