Apple iPad 2 and Eee Slider get video comparison

Another day, another two high flying tablets get a video comparison thanks to our friends over at tabletbite.com. Today’s comparison features the iPad 2 and the Asus Eee Pad Slider, both in the 10 inch category, even if the iPad 2 is formally a 9.7 inch slate. To sum things up a little, you should know that the iPad 2 is, overall, a better entertainment slate, being built for those casual users that wants a smooth operating machine and a great UI.

The iPad 2 does that great, as everybody claims, but it’s not the brightest kid in the class when it comes to productivity. The Slider, however, with its slide out keyboard and sturdy design is better for those looking to use the slate also at work. Considering the Slider packs the aforementioned keyboard on the back of the slate, it’s no wonder that it’s considerably thicker and heavier than Apple’s slate- 17.7 mm > 8.8 mm and 886g > 613g.

However, if you’ll want the same physical keyboard functionality on the iPad 2, you’ll have to buy a case with keyboard, which will add some grams and millimeters to the slate. A chapter where the Slider clearly wins is ports. Asus’s slate has a microHDMI port, a microSD card, a USB 2.0 port, while the iPad 2 has that proprietary port for charging and connecting Apple peripherals and an audio jack. Sure, this is not a horrible flaw, but a cautionary measure Apple takes in order to limit the use of the iPad 2 outside a Apple ecosystem as much as possible.

As for hardware, the Slider comes with a Tegra 2 chip and 1 GB of RAM, while the iPad 2 has a A5 dual core processor and just 512 MB of RAM. Don’t let the raw numbers fool you, though, as the performance on the iPad 2 is better. Apple customized the hardware inside the iPad 2 in order to work flawlessly with iOS, while Tegra 2 chips are thrown in 10 inch slates kind of indistinctly, as manufacturers have less time and resources to fine tune every of their tablets properly.

It’s hard to pick a winner between the two also when it comes to displays, even if the IPS, 1280 x 800 found on the Slider seems a tad superior to the IPS 1024 x 768 on the iPad, but the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad 2 beats the 16:10 found on the Slider when it comes to daily functionality, as the Slider’s portrait mode is limited in terms of functionality. But let’s let the video comparison do the talking. Enjoy.
