Are you aware of the lacks Windows 7 Starter has?

More and more netbooks get shipped with Windows 7 these days, and the vast majority of them come with the basic Windows 7 Starter edition. However, a recent study from Retrevo showed quite clearly that most users are not aware that this version of Microsoft’s OS has a couple of significant lacks:

  • you cannot customize your desktop (so you will get stuck with the default Win 7 logo for good);
  • you cannot use multiple displays (although there is a VGA port on most of the netbooks, you won’t be able to use an external monitor and the mini laptop’s screen on the same time. You can use them each at the time. );
  • you cannot play DVDs (most notebooks don’t come with an internal DVD player, but you can easily connect an external one on USB; Win 7 Starter won’t allow using one).

An there are some others, like no Aero, no Multimedia Center, no premium Games and no Multi-Touch support. As long as Microsoft has to say, if you don’t like these, you should upgrade to the next version of Windows 7, Home Premium. But that will cost you “just” 80 bucks. Ouch!

And back to the report, 60% of the inquired people had no idea Win 7 Starter came with these lacks. After finding about them, 56% said they will not be satisfied by this version of the OS, but they were not at all happy with the pricey upgrade idea. And since 80 to 90 percents of current netbooks equipped with the new Microsoft OS come with Starter Edition, I’m sensing more and more unsatisfied customers in the near future. And all the complaints will go towards Microsoft and their greed. But will this make any difference?

    I just received a new Asus Eee PC 1005HA with Windows 7 Starter yesterday. I was deleting all of the bloatware off it and had the netbook connected to my monitor. I can most certainly confirm that I was able to use the laptop and monitor screen at the same time.

    Asus also has a “System Settings” utility that allows you to change the desktop wallpaper – it can even be configured to scroll through multiple wallpapers at preset time intervals.

    On the DVDs – I don’t know, don’t care. Who carries around DVDs anymore? Just rip it to VOBs or an Xvid – the laptop will probably last longer on battery than using an optical drive.
