Asus 1025CE EEE PC netbooks demoed on video – Computex

We talked about the Asus 1025CE netbooks yesterday as they were announced and now we got to see them in action at Computex, so we bring you a video hands-on from the scene and a couple of pictures.

As I’ve told you already, there are going to be two versions in the 1025 line, the standard 1025C and the premium 1025CE. Both offer new generation CedarTrail CPUs (the one displayed at the show came with  an ATOM N2800 clocked at 1.86 GHz), 1-2 GB of memory, 250-320 GB hard-drive, 3 Cell 28 Wh or 6 Cell 56 Wh batteries and WIndows Starter. Plus Wireless N and Bluetooth.

Premium 1025CE Asus EEE PCs also get dual boot operating systems, with a 2 second instant ON OS bundled next to Windows, plus an USB 3.0 slot with a power-as-you-sleep mode that will allow you to charge gadgets via USB while the netbooks is shut down.

New case looks really nice and keyboard is slightly redesigned as well. There’s the same 10.1 inch 1024 x 600 non-glare display we saw before and the bezel around it is still glossy (that’s something we hoped might change as well). But it might be matte as well on some versions – see the pink option in the pictures, with a white bezel.

More details in the clip below.

And also have a look at some photos with the Asus EEE PC 1025 series at Computex.

Surprised no one tried running any benchmarks.  The dual core higher clock speeds and the new GMA 5600/5650 based on the PowerVR SGX545 are significant unknowns.

Though from the few videos shown so far on these models, and related Cedar Trail announcements, I have gathered the following…

-1080p video playback works with just over 30% CPU usage.

-The N2600 in the 1025C had a WEI score of 2.9, compared to the 2.8 that the AMD C-50/Z-01 and the 2.3 a single core Intel ATOM N450 gets.  Though similar to the N550 score, the GMA in the new Cedar Trail systems should be much better than the old GMA 3150 as Intel aimed for a minimum of double the graphical performance.

-The demonstration systems were apparently using the 3 cell battery.  So the 6 cell will stick out more.

Yeah, I noticed that too. However, usually at show you can’t really install anything on those devices, you’ll have no admin rights on them. You could fast download crystalmark which requires no installing and run it though, but if the guys at the booth will show you, they’ll usually ask you to stop.

Just an update, but it has been noted on the MSI WindPad 120W with Cedar Trail 1.86GHz N2800 and 2GB of RAM (1.92GB indicated in system properties) that the WEI score jumps to 3.4…

Given the higher GMA performance that the score likely represents the CPU performance and that puts it right about the same as the Pine Trail Intel Atom 1.8GHz D525.

Not bad considering these are the new mobile offerings and the nettop D2700 still pushes it further with a 2.13GHz clock speed.

Though AMD will continue to have the GPU advantage and the Zacate line should still edge out the ATOM.  However, the lower end Ontario will be losing out on both CPU and power efficiency and rely entirely on GPU advantage.

Also correction on my previous note on the Eee PC 1025 demonstration systems batteries, they were 5200mAh 6 cells and not 3 cells as previously suggested.  Someone actually took one out and looked at the label.
