Asus 1201K – budget 12 incher with AMD inside

Here’s another 12 inch Asus netbook available on the market. While the previous ones came with interesting features, this one is oriented towards affordability.

The cool part is that it still brings the same body as the other 12 inch Asus mini laptops and it actually looks a lot like the EEE PC 1201N. Thus, it comes with that nice Full-size chiclet keyboard and the not so great dimpled trackpad with a single click button.

Inside you get an AMD platform; it’s not that latest generation AMD Nile though, but an older one. So, the Atom processors were dumped for an AMD Geode NX 1750 CPU, single-core, clocked at 1.4GHz. Not sure how fast it ist when compared to single core Atoms, but I do know it is a lot more power hungry, with a TDP of 25W. There’s also a SiS 741GX graphic chipset, 160 GB hard-drive, 1 GB of DDR2 memory, Windows XP OS and Wi-Fi N connectivity. Plus a 6 Cell battery, but with that hungry hardware inside, you shouldn’t expect more than 2-3 hours of life from the EEE PC 1201K.

Like I’ve said, the Asus 1201K was developed with a budget concern and that’s obvious when you take a look at the specs and features. Initial plans were to only launch it on emerging markets, but it is now also available in Italy, for 329 euros. That would translate in around 330-350 bucks if it were to reach the States, but that’s still a mystery right now. Still, when compared with all the other 12 inch Asus EEE PCs available right now, this one would be at least $100 bucks cheaper than each one of those. So quite a nice deal for an office computer or a mini laptop for your kids, don’t you think?
