Asus 1201PN EEE PC gets official page and is almost ready to ship

The Asus EEE PC 1201PN was the first netbook with ION2 rumored to start shipping this year. Thus, in the last couple of months, there was a lot of hype around it. However, early tests from Notebook Check signaled a flaw, which was later confirmed: 1201PN does not come with Optimus.

That means that it offers the hybrid graphics part of Nvidia’s new ION , with the 16 CUDA Cores graphic chip from Nvidia, but lack the intelligent management system of those two graphic solutions. However, there are some rumors Optimus can be implemented with some software tweaks, as the hardware on an Optimus enabled solution and a non-Optimus one is exactly the same.

Anyway, the EEE PC 1201PN just got an official page on Asus’s site. This means that it should get closer and closer to becoming available in the US, as in other parts of the globe it’s already shipping (New Zealand for instance).

There are already some shops in the US taking pre-orders for this 12 incher, so we might see it shipping later this month.

In terms of specs, you get:

• 12.1 inch LED glare display, 1366 x 768 px
• Intel Atom N450 processor + Nvidia ION
• 2 GB of memory
• 250/320 GB hard-drive + EEE Storage
• Wi-Fi N + Bluetooth 2.1 + Gigabit Lan
• 6 Cell battery (around 6 hours of life)
• weighs 3.25 pounds

Asus 1201PN - available in many colors, but with glossy finish

The cool part is that this Asus will be available in 4 different colors: Black, Silver, Blue, Red. The not so cool one is that all of them will be glossy, so smudges and scratches will be a problem.

Also, the 1201PN will go in the US with a starting price of $499. That’s similar to the price of the Asus 1201N, the current 12 incher with ION. But, while this new one comes with better graphics and theoretically better battery life, the older one had a dual core Atom processor, so is superior in terms of everyday performance.
