Asus 1201T – performance for good money, now available in the US

The 1201T is one of the many 12 inch Seashell netbooks offered by Asus right now. However, only the EEE PC 1201N was available in the US till recently, the more popular version with dual core ATOM and Nvidia ION. It’s now time for the 1201T to hit the states, offering some good performances and a decent price.

This mini laptop packs an AMD platform, with the single core AMD Athlon MV-40 1.60 GHz processor and ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics, completed by 2 GB of memory, 160 GB storage, decent connectivity (standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) and Windows 7 Home as the OS. Standard ports and features are present, but there’s no HDMI output. As for battery life, only expect around 4 hours out of it, that AMD hardware is not the best in terms of energy consumption.

Still, the 1201T is more powerful than a standard netbook. It can easily face 720p content self stored or Flash, but will struggle with 1080p (will only play low-bitrate such content). Overall experience in daily tasks under Windows 7 is fine, but don’t expect too much in terms of multitasking, the Athlon processor inside is only a single-core. Still, it performs more or less the same as a dual core ATOM D330.

In fact, if you want to compare the 1201N with the 1201T, you can see in the picture below (from Yugatech), based on Windows 7 marks, that they are pretty much the same, the 1201N being better in terms of graphics, thanks to the ION solution it offers. It also bring similar battery life, so the two devices are really tight when having to choose between one or another.

Especially if you consider that the 1201N sells right now for around $480 in the US, while the 1201T is available on Newegg for just $389 (that’s almost 20% less).

Update: It seems that the 1201T available on Newegg sells without any OS, while the 1201N comes with Windows 7 Home. You should also take this info i missed initially into consideration.

I for one don’t really know what would i choose, there are many aspects to put in balance. But how about you?
