Asus 900AX EEE PC – new 9 inch netbook, but is it actually new?

If we were in spring 2008, the news of Asus announcing a new 9 inch netbook wouldn’t have been out of ordinary. But now, after two years, it kind of is. The new device we’re talking about is the Asus 900PC EEE PC, one we should soon see on some markets.

A page on this product was recently added on the Asus official site. Taking a look at it would make you quickly realize this is in fact a device very much similar to the Asus 900HA, one very popular during the middle of 2008, just before 10 inch mini laptops entered the market. See the specs for details:

  • 8.9 inch dispaly – 1024 x 600 px
  • Atom N270 1.60 GHz processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 160 GB hard-drive
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • 2xUSB, VGA, card-reader, audio, optional WebCam
  • Windows XP Home
  • 3 Cell battery (4 Hours)

Neither in terms of looks the 900AX is different from its predecessor, boosting the same matte black case and standard flat keyboard.

Thus, the Asus EEE PC 900AX is a revamped version of the 900HA. So, although a new product, there’s nothing new about it besides the name.

We could see a couple of explanations behind this product. First, Asus might have some stocks of unsold 9 inchers and this would be a smart way to dump them. Also, such a device is definitely compact and small, thus more portable than a standard 10 incher. Weighing only 2.2 pounds, it will surely make it to the list of lightest netbooks on the market and I know a quite a few of you would lean towards such a device. Especially since it’s going to be new (so will come with warranty) and probably very affordable.

If it’s going to reach US, it will probably go for around $220 – $240 . And for you guys looking for an ultra-portable mini laptop for peanuts, this would be the only choice for a new product (the alternative is buying an used 2 years old one, but you get no guarantee that one will keep working ).

So, although the decision of launching a new 8.9 inch mini laptop seems funny on a first look basis, there might be some success in store for the Asus EEE PC 900AX. Stay tuned for mode details about it in the next weeks.
