Asus Eee Box EB1501P – new top of the line nettop

After being the ones starting the netbooks segment in 2007, the guys at Asus also had a massive word in developing another segment: nettops, those compact mini computers, meant to replace your heavy and bulky desktops and good enough for all kind of daily and multimedia activities.

The EEE Box line is the one containing all Asus’s nettops and there’s a new exponent in this series, ready to enter the market: the Asus EEE Box EB1501P.

This mini PC packs quite some powerful hardware. Take a look at the specs below:

  • Intel Atom Dual-core D525 processor
  • new Nvidia ION graphics, the most powerful version, with 16 CUDA cores
  • 2 GB of DDR3 memory (support for up to 4 GB)
  • 250-320 GB hard-drive
  • Wi-Fi N and Fast Ethernet
  • 6 x USB ports, eSATA, card reader, HDMI
  • DVD burner
  • Windows 7 Home Premium

Asus Eee Box EB1501P - top of the line nettop, powerful and expensive

The Asus EEE Box EB1501P should be available in the US in the next weeks, with a starting price of around $500 and options for white/black casing. Not sure whether this price will also include keyboard and mouse, but it better do, as it is pretty steep. Still, this EEE BOX is one of the very few nettops packing a DVD burner, with a Blu-Ray equipped version launching this Fall too.and it’s 200 bucks cheaper than the Mac Mini (which is more powerful though).

This nettop actually packs the same technology as the Asus EEE PC 1215N netbook I’ve tested a couple of weeks ago, so you can be sure it’s going to be snappy and capable of running all kind of multimedia content (1080P self stored and Flash included), plus some of the recent games, as long as you don’t want to run them on full details. Of course, the EB1501P will probably going to be used primarily as a HTPC, like most nettops do, but remember that this one is actually more.

However, there’s one question in my mind: if it packs the same hardware as the 1215N netbook and will supposedly have the same price, why not get the mini laptop? You can connect that to a display as well, plus you get the mobility. Is really a nettop worth $500 these days? You might say this one is more compact, can be hidden behind a TV and comes with that DVD unit. Yeah, but who uses DVDs anymore these days, with all these online streaming services getting so good?

Anyway, more details on thw EEE Box EB1501P will be available in the near future, so stay tuned for them. Also, don’t forget to check my list of best nettops available on the market if you’re looking for such a mini PC.

Update: This nettop is now available in stores and goes for $519 (with Shipping included) from AmazonSee more details, pics and reviews from buyers via this link . It is still quite expensive, although I believe it’s one of the most powerful nettops on the market right now, if not the most.
