Asus EEE Pad Memo, Slate EP121, Transformer and Slider unveiled at CES

The much awaited Asus Press Conference is on route at CES and we were expecting a bunch of novelties and details on the subject of the day: tablets.

We’ve seen early Asus EEE Pad touch tablets in the last year, with the big EEE Pad EP121 and the smaller 1o inch EEE Pad ET101TC , but now they are closer than ever to their final versions.

But enough jiberish, let’s dive in and see what’s new in terms of tablets from Asus, at their conference.

Small 7 inch portable tablet with an IPS multi-touch panel, built on a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon and running Android 3.0 . It’s built for “artists”, according to Asus and is optimized to be used with a capacitive stylus, but can also be as well “maneuvered” with your fingers. Comes with dual-cameras (front 1.3 MPxs and 5 MPx rear one). can also be used as a mobile phone when paired with a Bluetooth MeMic accessory.

That’s the one we’ve been hearing about, the big 12.1 inch pad . Asus claims it is the most powerful tablet right now and they are probably right, as this one comes with a Core i5-470UM processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 SSd GB storage. So it is a powerful computer in a tablet form. Runs Windows 7 of course and comes with all the needed ports and connectivity options.

The screen is a 12.1 inch 1280 x 800 px one, with an IPS multi-touch capacitive panel.

Of course, at 12.1 inch, this is not the most portable tablet. It won’t be cheap either. But given some proper accessories, like a stand and wireless keyboard, I can see it becoming quite popular.

You’ll argue that having a tablet without a keyboard is a no no for productivity. The Asus Transformer comes to solve this problem, bringing a 10.1 inch with a dock-able keyboard unit combo, as you can see in the pic below.

The actual tablet is a 10.1 inch one with an IPD 1280 x 800 px display. Runs on Tegra 2 with Android (probably 2.3) and this should make it faster than the iPad. It’s also slimmer and lighter than it as well. You can use this device as a tablet or simply dock it into the given unit, which comes with a Full-size keyboard. When connected, you will also get battery life to up to 16 hours (not sue what’s the battery life for the stand alone tablet) and add more USB ports and a card-reader to the end packet.

I must say this is an amazing product. It looks so solid and well built overall and comes to meet mobility and productivity. With a proper price, I can see this one becoming a bestseller for sure.

But there’s more. The Asus Slider is similar to the Transformer, but comes with an always one keyboard that slides beneath the tablet when not in use. Of course, this makes the overall unit thicker and heavier, plus the keyboard is minimalistic and not a Full Size one like on the above mentioned version.

Specs wise, the Slider and the Transformer are the same so I guess Asus wanted to have two different form factors for customers to choose from. Smart thinking.

Now, prices vary from $399 to $1099 for the above tablets. More details in the pictures below.

Also, the Slate will be available from January, with the transformer in April, Slider in May and Memo in June.

All in all, I can say I’m impressed by this Asus new toys. Especially by the Transformer, which seems just like the tablet I would need right now.
