Asus Eee Pad Slider – unboxing and video hands on

The Eee Pad Slider is about to make its US and European debut in just a couple of weeks and now we’re able to bring you a couple of hands on and unboxing videos, thanks to our friends from tabletbite.com. They got their hands on a review sample that’s pretty much identical to what we’ll have in stores just down the road and already had the time to play a little with this upcoming Honeycomb slate.

In case you forgot, the Eee Pad Slider is 10.1 inch Android tablet with an IPS screen, which comes with a slide out keyboard, the same type of gimmick we’ve had on Nokia smart phones a while back. At a first glance, the Slider is a great tablet when it comes to design and build quality. Materials used are great, moving parts, such as a the sliding mechanism, are very solid and ultimately feel classy.

The sliding mechanism is actually the highlight of this first run with the Slider. The mechanism works flawlessly, being very easy to go from tablet mode to tablet meets netbook mode and seems to be built in order to last for thousands of transitions. Unfortunately, the stand function has only one viewing angle, which is  fine when you use the slate at your desk, but might be a bit of a stretch when lying in bed or something.

The Slider has a bulkier profile because of the slide out keyboard

As for the keyboard, it’s chiclet style with flat keys that flex pretty much when pressed. Also, there’s enough space between keys which might tamper with fast typing. They should have made keys larger and leave less space between them. The slate has an IPS screen with great colors and viewing angles. Actually, the screen used on the Slider is the same as the one on the Eee Pad Transformer, which is one of the best out there, even compared with the one on the iPad 2.

The OS on board is Android 3.1, while ports include mini HDMI, micro SD and a full size USB 2.0 port. Another interesting detail about the Slider is that it comes with a physical reset button on the side, something you don’t quite expect to see on a high flying gadget. Stay tuned for a couple of clips with the Eee Pad Slider and check back soon, as we’ll have a proper video review pretty soon. Enjoy.
