Asus Eee PC 1201T – powerful netbook with AMD inside

I know this news is a little bit old, but i really have to tell you folks about the new 12 inch netbooks from Asus, the EEE PC 1201T. Because there really are some aspects worth mentioning about this device.

First, it looks very good, with a slim body with brushed aluminum parts (at least that’s how they look from the pictures). Also, it is very thin, not like other netbooks from the EEE PC line, but more like the UL20A or the UL30A portables. The chiclet style keyboard is borrowed from those too, and so is probably the touch-pad.

On the inside, Asus dropped Intel’s Atom platform for an AMD Congo one: there a 1.6GHz MV40 dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 320 GB hard-drive, along with the RS780MN chipset and ATI Radeon HD3200 graphic solution that can easily run 1080p Full HD content. Connectivity is very good (WiFi N, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR), however there’s only a VGA output and no HDMI, so there’s no big score for playing 1080p if you can’t get it on a proper sized display.

Asus 1201T - nice looks, good performance - will this be a winner?

Everything else is just standard: decent size, nearly 3 pounds weight and a 6 Cell battery. However, since we have an AMD platform here, this should only be enough for around 4.5 hours autonomy. But consider that the hardware in the 1201T EEE PC is way better than what Atom netbooks have (graphics is also better, but poorer than Atoms with Nvidia ION bundled along).

So, this Asus 1201T is a pretty nice device: great looking and powerful, but with just an average autonomy. Price and overall reliability of the ATOM platform will be the ones deciding if this netbook will be a success. And speaking of price, i would reckon something around 420-470 bucks for it.

Not sure when we’ll get this device on the US market though, but I’ll keep you posted.
