Asus no longer best seller in netbook segment

Asus is no longer the best selling producer in the netbook segment, as it lost it’s top spot to Acer according to the sales results of Q2 2009.

Ever since 2007 when the first netbook was introduced on the market, Asus was the uncrowned king of the category. As more and more producers joined the dance later on, its market share began to drop, and now they’ve been beaten by Acer. MSI comes in third, HP in 4th and Lenovo in 5th place, with Dell down to sixth.

Acer’s jump was because of their aggressive market strategy , according to Gartner research analyst, Eileen He , strategy with results both in mature markets like US and also in emerging regions like Asia or Pacific. People appreciate Acer’s devices because they provide perhaps the best price/features rapport in this class, and like i said when i reviewed the Aspire One AOD150, price is a significant factor in this segment. MSI saw a very good leap in the Pacific region too, so who knows, they might be next to beat Asus in the next quarter?

So although Asus had the advantage of being first and have such a diversified range of netbooks, they managed to loose their stop position, but the battle is just starting. And since the netbook’s segment saw an almost 400% increase in shipped items from Q2 2008 to Q2 2009, the battle will get fiercer as the pie gets bigger. And that’s good news for us, consumers, as competition brings along better products with more affordable prices.
