Blu-ray player for your netbook, from Asus

I’ve told you before about some of the choices you have for buying an external DVD drive for your netbook. As the technology evolves and more and more netbooks are now able to run 1080p movies, it was just a matter of time before an external USB powered Blu-ray player would enter the market. And it seems it already did (source) and is of course brought to you by Asus.

It’s called SBC-04D1S-U and is the world’s first slim Blu-ray combo player for netbooks. It has the same shape and stand like design and the same glossy exterior (doh, cause it’s an Asus) as the other external USB drives from Asus, but comes with a fancy blue light on the exterior, so you won’t mistake it with and ordinary DVD player.

And in terms of specs, this drive offers:

  • Max. 4.8X BD-ROM/R/RE (SL)(DL)/ 8X DVD-ROM(SL)(DL)/8X DVD+R/ 8X DVD+RW – Read
  • Max. 8X DVD+R/ 8X DVD+RW – Write
  • Max. 5X DVD-RAM –Read & Write

As for prices and availability, you can find it for around 170 to 200 bucks, but only a handful of stores have it in their offers just yet.

All in one, it might be nice to have a Blu-ray player for your netbook and this Asus SBC-04D1S-U is definitely a good choice. But, i find it a too expensive accessory, at least for now. Don’t you think?
