Canoe Lake 14 mm netbook – a glimpse into the not too far future

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad, he called the tablet a “magical device”. In fact, the word “magic” was the burden of the whole presentation. Now, if that was magic, what can we say about the incredible Canoe Lake netbook prototype unveiled by Intel as Computex this year, in order to offer a preview of how future mini laptops with future Low-voltage Intel chips will look like?

First of all, Intel launched their new line of chips for ultra-thin laptops and tablets, Oak Trail. This is in fact the successor of the Zxx line and will be able to provide better performance (with 1080p capabilities and HDMI output), while consuming even less energy. The series will offer support for x86 systems so will be able to run Windows 7 but first devices built on this platform should be available in Q1 2011.

Of course, unveiling a new line of chips is not exactly a front-cover story. However, having a 14 mm ultra-light laptop to exemplify it, does. And that is the case of the Canoe Lake prototype displayed by Intel. This one in fully functional and can be seen at Computex. Inside there’s a PineTrail processor (the new dual-core N550 actually) and GMA 3150 graphics and the system runs Windows 7 OS.

The cool part is how thin it is (only 14 mm – 0.55 inch), way thinner than the likes of Macbook Air or Vaio X. And way lighter. You can see some pictures with it below and also a hand-on clip from Sascha at Netbooknews.de (notice how exited he is with the device). In his words, this prototype looks like a 2000 bucks laptop but will cost a lot less.

The main point is that, if Intel managed to provide such an ultra-slim working netbook on PineTrail, think about mini laptops on OakTrail will look like? Under 2 pounds 10 inchers sure don’t sound so futuristic now, do they?
