Dell Streak prices: $299 at AT&T , $550 without a plan

Dell’s 5 inch tablet PMP thingy is right around the corner, as you’ll be able to order it in the States form Friday, the 13th. There have been many suppositions about prices and plans, but now everything is out in the open: Dell Strike will be yours for $299, if you care for a 2-year plan from AT&T.

If you want it unsubsidized though, come with a small fortune to the store, as it will cost $550. However, if you head to Dell’s site TODAY, you can preoder it and get a 99c Plantronics headset included, plus Free 2nd Day Shipping (so you will have it at your home in the US tomorrow).

Now, Dell’s Streak is some kind of a pioneer. Not really small enough to be a PMP, like the Zune HD or the iPod Touch, but also not big enough to be a true competitor for the kings of touch tablets, the iPad, it will try to attract customers from those looking to merge both. Oh, and it’s also a phone, but i for one can’t really imagine holding a computer to my ear. Can you?

Take a look at the specs below for some more info:

  • 5 inch 480 x 800 px display, capacitive touchscreen, covered in ultra-tough Gorilla Glass
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and 256 MB RAM memory
  • 2 GB storage space + microSD card (supports up to 32 GB drives )
  • UMTS / GPRS / EDGE class and HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
  • 5MPx back camera and front-facing video-calls camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1
  • Android 1.6 OS
  • weighs 220 g (7.9 oz) and measures 152 x 78 x 10 mm (6 x 3.1 x 0.4 inches)

Now, I’m not saying this Dell is not a great device to have. Certainly seems interesting in terms of specs, and when Dell decides to upgrade that OS to a newer Android version (should get Android 2.1 in September), it will be even better (will get extra features, like new Apps, support for Flash and 720p video shooting).

Still, it is pricey. One of these for $300 unsubsidized would have been great, but for nearly $600 (including the extra MicroSD card you’ll have to get). And I still can’t seem to find it a purpose: it tries to run after 3 different rabbits (smartphone, touch tablet and PMP) and it might end up catching none.

Anyway, a more detailed look on this Dell Strike 5 inch mini-tablet will follow on the site in the next days, so stay tuned. Also, your feedback on the machine would be great for sure.
