Dreamscreen tablets from HP unveiled

There seems to be quite a buzz around tablet devices in the last months. HP just announced their Dreamscreen thingy, after rumors of a similar device from Techcrunch emerged during the summer. Also, Apple is working on something similar, a touchscreen all-in-one gadget that should be the new “netbook killer” from Cupertino.

Still, the HP Dreamscreen is not an independent computer, but more a buffed up photo frame. You can find bellow some of the main features of this device:

  • comes in two different sizes, the Dreamscreen 100 (1o.2″ screen) and the 130 (13.3″ screen). Both have 2 GB internal memory and USB/memory card slots for adding extra content.
  • comes with wireless connectivity and can connect to Internet to get certain info, like weather info or Facebook statuses. Doesn’t have a browser though and can not be used for web-surfing. Also, uses wireless to connect to a PC or laptop and get or stream content from there.
  • touch enabled controls for easy access to all the functions but no touch display.
  • capable of playing video materials on full screen (not sure if it can run 720ps too)
  • capable of playing music and displaying slide-shows of your photos

So, as you can see, the HP Dreamscreen is not an independent tablet computer like the one Apple plans to launch, but just a nice multimedia gadget. I for one can’t see an exact purpose for it, but perhaps you guys will: it could be used as a fancy Alarm Clock and morning updater, a control Hub for the multimedia system on your house, a kitchen small display, etc.

One thing’s for sure, this device  really looks good, as you can see in some of the pictures below or in this hands on pics from Slashgear.

As for prices, the Dreamscreen 100 will retail for $249 and the bigger 130 from $299. Hp claims both will be available in stores by the middle of October.
