Evolio Neura 3G tablet gets exclusive preview (video)

The Evolio Neura 3G is a 9.7 inch Android tablet designed and sold by a Romanian company and although is the first slate to come from this country, it has big plans- to directly go against the iPad 2. Of course, we chuckle when we hear this, but nevertheless, we’re always paying attention to new gadgets and tablets, as a great product can possibly pop up from anywhere.

Tabletbite.com comes with a hands on video and preview of this Android tablet, and our first impression is that the Evolio Neura is a decently built tablet, but doesn’t have anything that will make it stand out in a crowd. The slate has a black finish on the back and partially in front, with some chrome touches here and there.

The aspect ratio is 4:3 and under the screen you have a button, while on the edge beneath the display there are a couple of ports. As for dimensions, the slate is 1.4 cm thick and weighs a maximum of 780 grams (3G version) and 760 grams (WiFi version), which kind of falls within this class’s limits, but overall this tablet feels a little chubby. Also, it’s heavier than most tablets in its class, heavier even than the Iconia Tab.

The Neura has a 9.7 inch HD display with a 1024 x 768 resolution, which is apparently identical with the screen on the iPad 2. But the one of the Neura doesn’t have the same quality as the one on Apple’s slate, as colors seem a bit dull and washed out, as you’ll see from the clip below. We’re not really sure why this happens, but we guess they chose a less “aggressive” color profile.

Specs are rather interesting. The slate is powered by a dual core, Tegra 2 CPU and comes with 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, which is a standard configuration for a high flying tablet. The Xoom tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer or the Iconia A500 all have the same configuration. The slate has only one camera, namely a front facing 1.3 MP camera, which is a pretty modest setup, considering there’s no rear facing camera and the front facing one won’t really be able to do much more than permitting the occasional video call.

The Evolio Neura has 16 GB of internal storage, but can be expanded up to 32 GB via an SD card. The OS is, sadly, Android 2.2 Froyo, which is an outdated version of Android and doesn’t take advantage of the tablet’s good hardware. Still, Evolio says that the tablet will be updated to Honeycomb around September.

Oh, and there’s one more great thing: the price; around 450 euros for the 3G version and 370 euros for the WiFi only version sounds nice, but it’s actually not a lot cheaper than a bunch of other tablets coming from better known producers.

Stay tuned for an in depth video presentation with Romania’s first touch screen tablet.
