ExoPC touch tablet looks promising

This is a device i haven’t mentioned here on this site before but one that started to get a lot of hype in the last weeks: the ExoPC, a 11.6 inch slate which announces itself as quite a competitor for Apple’s iPad.

It will be slightly bigger than the iPad and a little bit heavier, because of the larger display, but still it should weight under 2 pounds. Inside you’ll find the Atom PineTrail platform with Intel Atom N450 processor, 2 GB of memory, 32 GB SSD storage and Broadcom HD graphic accelerator. All these of course powered by Windows 7. So, pretty much what we have on regular netbooks these days, but will this hardware be able to provide a snappy experience on the ExoPC? Well, from the early hands-on clips available with the device, it sure seems so.

In fact, the ExoPC comes with a customized skin built over Windows 7 with a nice design, intuitive interactivity and tons of applications (there will be a dedicated online store from where we’ll be able to buy all the apps needed). The clip below shows some details of the ExoPC and focuses on this interface, which, to my own surprise, is very snappy.

So, this might be one the most interesting tablets available this year. In fact, it is nearly identical to the WeTab available in Europe, except that is made by a Canadian company. The capacitive multitouch display is very nice and the hardware inside, although not the most powerful one, allows smooth performance and multimedia playing (including 1080p movies for instance – and you can even stream them via HDMI). Plus, unlike the iPad, this tablet is built on Windows and will be able to run all your daily applications, plus run Flash content (games or sites like Hulu, Youtube, etc).

So all in all, this ExoPC is definitely a gadget worth keeping an eye on. I’m curious to see how much will it cost, because if it comes with an affordable price (let’s say around $500), that’s for sure a present I’d want for Christmas. Stay tuned for now, more details will be available soon.
