Frameless-screen notebooks? Yey!
I’m not a fan of big frame displays, like the ones on the MacBook Air for example or the current 10 inch Asus EEE PCs. Those bezels are just wasted space, but luckily, this might change pretty soon, as the major ODM netbooks producers and panel makers have joined forces in order to create frameless displays for these mini laptops. And we might see these on many netbooks by the middle of 2010.
Technologically, there aren’t details on how the panel makers plan to make these frameless netbook screens possible, but they’ll probably use Corning’s reinforced Gorilla glass (mode details here).
Still, having frameless displays on our mini netbooks brings a big smile on my face. This improvement could allow more compact overall devices with bigger screens (imagine you can have a 12 inch display on a device the size of a current 10 inch netbook). The small bezel would also benefit a lot to convertible and touch-sensitive devices. There are however questions on what will happen to the webcam and mic, but i’m sure manufacturers will find a solution for these.
Anyway, i’m quite curious to see where will this subject lead to. From the rumors we get these days, by the end of 2010 netbooks could be way better machines than what they are today. Yey!
