HP Compaq AirLife 100 – first smartbook from HP
Smartbooks might be a segment growing by quite a bunch in the next period, with more and more producers announcing devices in this niche. Now it’s time for HP, with their Compaq Airlife 100, in fact the first such smartbook in their line.
Smartbooks are actually devices meant to be become the perfect multimedia and business travel companions, combining characteristics from smartphones and laptops in a single device. You get low-power hardware in a laptop or tablet shaped computer, one that is always connected to the network via 3G and offers Wi-fi, GPS and all-day battery autonomy.
Unlike standard netbooks, these devices are way more light and compact, but are also less powerful and don’t use Intel’s or AMD’s x86 processors, so can’t run a full-OS like Windows.

HP’s Compaq AirLife 100 will live to the reputation of these smartbook, bringing some nice looks (see the picture) and the following specs:
- 10.1 inch resistive touch-display, 1024 x 600 px (won’t be convertible, so you won’t be able to transform the device into a tablet)
- Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 CPU – 1 GHz
- 512MB RAM, 512MB Flash memory
- 16GB SSD storage
- Android OS (with a customized interface)
- SD slot, Micro-USB port, Audio out, Webcam, Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth, 3G
- 28 Wh battery
- Android OS (with “Compaq touch experience”)
All these in a device measuring 10.39 x 6.56 x 0.94 inches and weighing around 2.2 pounds (1 Kg).
So the HP Compaw AitLife 100 looks like a decent smartbook: light and portable and probably with a nice autonomy.
No info on prices and release date yet, but we know that this device will be available in Europe and the US. More should be available soon, so stay tuned. Also, keep en eye on smartbooks in general, with devices like this one or the Lenovo Skylight, who knows what might be available next.
