iPad initial demand greater than initial iPhone demand back in 2007

Well, that’s definitely unexpected, at least for me. As i told you on my earlier articles on Apple’s iPad, i consider the device just a bigger iPod Touch that’s just not worth buying, especially for the price Apple asks for it.

However, a recent study proves me once again I’m different from the regular buyer. It seems that initial demand for the iPad is greater than it was for the iPhone back in 2007. And remember the phrensy it generated and the huge lines and hysteria from the end of June 2007, when it was first available in stores.

This is based on a recent survey conducted by RBC/ChangeWave . 13% of the participants declared they will definitely buy the iPad or are interested in buying it, while back in 2007 only 9% claimed the same about the iPhone.

This proves that Apple’s marketing machine has gotten even better lately, especially if we consider that touch tablets are still on their early days and there’s no proven market for them.

Anyway, the survey also suggests that most buyers will be interested in buying the cheapest ($499 – 19%) and the most expensive version ($829 – 19%), while some are still undecided (33% of the participants). I was expecting for the cheap version to be popular, as price, although pretty high, is affordable for an Apple product. But i was not expecting for so many to target the top one, although that one offers quite some features over the basic version.

As for what are they planning to do with the iPad, you can see more details in the picture below: web browsing is by far the most common use, with nearly 70% of the answers. Also, with 37% of the participants planning to use the gadget for reading ebooks, Amazon’s Kindle or the Nook should really expect a new fierce competitor on their digital ebook readers ground.

Anyway, this survey proves once again that no-matter how limited Apple products are, as long as they surprise, they’ll be popular. Thus, if i was somehow skeptical on the success of their iPad, as time passes, I’m more and more convinced they’ll once again manage to sell millions of these devices. And perhaps start a new trend for multi-touch tablets, as they did with multi-touch smartphones back in 2007, with the iPhone.
