MeeGo, new OS for tablets and netbooks from Nokia and Intel
With netbooks, smartphones and now tablets becoming more and more popular, a fierce battle for the operating systems inside these devices started. At the moment, Microsoft dominates most of these devices with their various Windows OSes, but other giant like Google or Intel entered the battle. And now, Intel joined forces with Nokia to create MeeGo, a mix-up between Moblin (Intel’s light OS for netbooks) and Maemo (Nokia’s OS seen on the N900).
MeeGo is if course a Linux Foundation based OS, but more details are for now a mystery. It will surely be a widgets ready OS and will be able to run applications from Nokia’s Ovi Store and Intel’s App Store. It will also support x86 and ARM processors, so we’ll see it in notebooks and tablets, but also on smartbooks and smartphones.
That’s all we know for sure. MeeGo is expected to be officially announced in the Q2 2010 (probably at an IDF event), while the first devices based on it should emerge later, in the second half of the year.
But stay tuned, we’ll surely update on this subject. For now, also check out the video below, a short interview with Intel’s and Nokia’s VicePresidents, Doug Fisher and Ari Jaaksi (but also others), all speaking about MeeGo and its plan to “conquer the world”.
