More details on world’s thinnest netbook, the Canoe Lake

After finding the early details about Intel’s ultra-thin Canoe Lake mini laptop yesterday, it’s now time for more info, as Sascha at netbooknews.de managed to snag the little device and shot a quick video.

Words are kind of in vain here, the clip bellow will speaks for itself.

However, like I’ve said before this netbook is incredibly thin, being able to rival with the likes of Vaio X or Dell Adamo, but hopefully with a better price tag (in fact, Intel announced such devices could be sold for around $600 next year).

Of course, there are no indications Intel will ever produce such a mini laptop, this is just a prototype. However, others will certainly do. It’s amazing how they managed to squeeze inside a new dual-core Atom N550 inside (with HT) , 2 GB of memory, a decent size HDD (they don’t use an SSD, most likely a 1.8 inch Hard-drive unit) and a 44Wh battery (that bulkier part above the keyboard).

Also, the 10.1 inch display comes with true 720p resolution (1280 x 720 px), although it can scale up to 1366 x 768 px with some skews and distortions.

And despite the increased resolution, it’s even more impressive how snappy the device performs. Sascha says this is by far the fastest netbook he has ever seen, and I’d bet he saw a few. However, seeing that CPU 10 – 15% occupied while on idle, that kind of bothered me.

OK, enough with this, see the clip below.

Now, the good thing about the Canoe Lake is that it tells us how future netbooks might look like. Given a year or two, we could end with mainstream 10-12 inchers weighing less than 2 pounds, measuring up to 15 mm and providing good everyday performances. Would you buy one of those? I know I would and I’d bet many of you would too.

And they say there’s no future for netbooks. Ha!
