More power for netbooks with Dual Core Atom processors?

Well, that would be a great news. It doesn’t really matter that the new netbooks can offer HD video playing and offer HD ready displays and 15+ hours of battery life like the MSI Wind U160 if they can’t offer a comfortable and snappy experience when running more than 2-3 daily applications.

The heart of the problem are the PineTrail CPUs. The only existing one for mini laptops at the moment, the N450 1.66 GHz Atom, offers no real increase in performances over the previous N270/N280 that are nearly 2 years old. Intel is working on this domain, announcing the N470 slightly faster CPU (1.83 GHz) and the N455/N575 lines with DDR3 memory support. But still, this are just minor improvements.

However, there are rumors claiming that Intel is working on new PineTrail based Dual-Core processors for netbooks, in the N500 line. There’s already the N510 found on a couple of nettops, but they do have to work on heat dissipation and TDP if they want to be able to insert one of these in the more compact body of a mini laptop.

For now, there are no exact details on when will these new processors be available on the market, how much will they cost or how will they be named. But the potential for them is huge, so having such low power dual-core processor with a decent price is definitely a thing Intel should be working on. Just think on how good will a combo between these CPUs and the new ION look on a 10 incher that will cost just around 450 bucks and will be able to run nearly all kind of applications you might want (except for games).
