MSI Wind Box DE220, a nettop with some power

There’s a new nettop in town, and quite a piece of machinery it is, as it packs some of the most potent hardware existing on such a mini computer at the moment, plus the needed looks and affordable price.

First, let’s have a look at the specs:

  • dual core Atom D510 processor
  • up to 4 GB of DDR2 memory
  • a 3.5″ 7200 rpm hard-drive (160 GB)
  • Discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300
  • 4x USB ports (2 frontal, 2 on the back)
  • VGA/HDMI, 6-in-1 card reader, E-Sata, etc

The combo between the dual core processor and the HD4300 graphics will definitely allow good performances in games or playing self stored on or line HD content. Plus, you get the extra fast storage drive; although size might be a problem, but you can easily change it with a bigger one.

Of course, there are some downsides for this MSI Wind Box DE220. First, there’s no optical unit, but that’s not really that much of a problem. But, it also seems that Wi-Fi connectivity is not present, and that means you’ll have to stick with the old cable for Internet connection. And i for one was looking forward to getting rid of as many cables as possible.

Anyway, the device definitely looks good and will do just fine in your living room, next to you big LCD or plasma TV. It’s not one of those invisible machines you can connect to the back of a display, it’s not designed like that.

Price and availability are still a mystery right now. Still, i expect a very competitive tag for this one, probably something around 400 bucks or even less. But let’s wait and see about that, I’ll update once i find more.
