MSI Wind U250 with dual core AMD hardware rumored
AMD powered netbooks manage to bring better performance levels than standard mini laptops on Intel’s ATOM, while keeping prices at a somewhat similar level. However, they can’t really compete with the likes of the ULV platforms from Intel, neither in terms of performances, nor in terms of autonomy.
This might change pretty soon though. Rumors of a MSI Wind U250 notebook with a dual core AMD NEO processor and new graphics are around, from a listing on Energy Star’s website, spotted by Brad at Liliputing.
This device will supposedly bring a 1.3 GHz dual-core AMD NeoK325 processor (also known as AMD Geneva K325), alongside up to 4 GB of RAM and capable graphics with 512 MB of dedicated video memory. These specs are close to what Intel offers with the SU7300 ULV, although graphic performances will definitely be improved over what the GMA 4500HD can provide.
Also, in terms of autonomy, the dual core AMD CPU comes with around 12 W TDP, while nowadays Intel’s ULV offer around 8-10 W. That graphic solution will also eat fast from the battery though, especially if it’s going to be a dedicated one as rumored. But, while current AMD platforms for mini laptops had problems with energy efficiency, the new one comes with significant improvements, bringing it closer to Intel’s solution (but still keeping it behind).
All in all, the entire package looks interesting. Expect AMD to offer very competitive prices too.
Not sure when will the MSI Wind U250 or the new platform be ready for shipment, but expect them probably in the 3rd quarter of 2010. Till then, take a look at the current good single-core AMD powered netbooks, like the Asus EEE PC 1201T, Lenovo x100e or MSI Wind12 U230.
And look for more details and updates on this site in the following weeks.
