Asus EEE PC 1201PN – PineTrail and Ion 2 in a 12.1 inch netbook

One of the most popular Asus netbooks is the 12 inch EEE PC 1201N, equipped with last generation Atom processors and Nvidia Ion graphics. Now, Asus has decided to update this line with the new PineTrail platform and the next generation Nvidia Ion 2.

This device was already seen at CeBIT and we’ll surely find more about it in the following days. For now, we only have a list of specs, and they look quite impressive:

  • Atom N450 1.66 GHz processor
  • 1 Gb of RAM + 160 GB hard-drive (+500 GB EEE Storage online)
  • 12.1 LED backlit display with HD resolution (1366 x 768 px)
  • Nvidia Ion 2 graphics
  • Wi-Fi N + Bluetooth
  • 6 Cell 63 wAg battery
  • Windows 7 as the OS

So, unlike the previous generation, we only get a single core processor and not even a very powerful one. This is definitely a poor choice in terms of performance, but the new Ion should be better than the previous one (although early tests say otherwise). At least we’ll get way better battery life, but that’s not really a main concern on such a portable device meant to offer better performances than a standard netbook, enough to run HD movies and 3D games. And there’s also the matter of price, and i expect this gadget to be cheaper than $499, since they dropped the dual core CPU.

Looks good, with a brushed aluminum finish

Thus, i really am looking forward to see some benchmarks of this new Asus EEE PC 1201N that ads to the already crowded 12 inch family from Asus (now with 5 members). More info should emerge in the following days of CeBIT, so stay tuned for those.

I’m looking at this netbook and the toshiba t135 as my next notebook. I want something portable and frankly, both are definitely small enough to suit my needs. I don’t know which one will give me better performance though. The dual core SU4100 w/ GMA4500M GPU or this netbook with the n450 and ION2 GPU. ANy suggestions? I can get them both for about the same price on Amazon.
