Celeron U3400 – new ULV processor from Intel, available soon
If you’re looking for portable mini laptops with more power than a standard netbook can offer, your best choice right now are the Intel CULV powered ones. CULV means “Comsumer Ultra Low Voltage” and processors in this line are meant to offer good every-day performance while still consuming as less energy as possible.
ULV processors can be found in 11.6 inch netbooks and above, in single or dual core versions. However, current ULV implementations aren’t that great in terms of TDP and graphic performances, thus we’ve been waiting for an update for quite a while. This update was first announced for the second half of 2010.
Recent info claim that Intel will have the Celeron U3400 as the first in this new line of ULV processors, a dual-core CPU cloked and 1.06 GHz, with 2 MB cache and support for DDR3 800MHz memory, all with 18W TDP. It will be part of the Calpella platform and will feature CPU and graphics on the same chip, much like the current Intel PineTrail architecture. Thus, that 18W TDP is for the entire solution, better than what nowadays ULVs can offer.
This processor should be available in computers in Q3 2010 and with quite an affordable price. Specs look very much similar to the Intel Core i5 520UM, but that processor will be more expensive and offers Intel’s Turbo Boost technology and 3MB of cache.
Anyway, the U3400 is just one of the first new ULV processors from Intel, expect more info on this subject in the next months and weeks.
I for one can’t wait having such a processor in a 12 inch mini laptop, alongside a decent graphic solution with Nvidia Optimus. That would be the ultimate portable computer: powerful, light, with good autonomy and still a price most of us could afford. Who knows, maybe we’ll have such a computer by the end of the year, ay?
