New Amazon Kindle DX digital reader – better and cheaper
I’ve always regretted not having enough time to read as much as I did when i was little and i kept saying to myself that if I’d have one of these digital ebook readers I’d go back to this habit. However, being so picky, couldn’t find a digital reader worth buying in my eyes, especially since they were quite expensive. In the last couple of weeks this changed.
First, the B&N Nook reader got a starting price tag of only $149. Quickly after that, Amazon cheapened their 6 incher Kindle to $189 (being available internationally for this price and with 3G). But since these were only price cuts, the new Amazon Kindle DX worths more our attention, as it comes with a significantly smaller price and also with improvements.
The first DX entered the market in 2009 for around 500 bucks. It came with a 9.7 inch e-ink display, keyboard and access to a huge collection of books and content from Amazon. The new version keeps the same design, only it comes with a graphite finish, besides the classic white one. And it offers some new goodies:
- the 9.7 inch e-ink display is improved. It can offer now sharper images, with way better contrast levels than before. That means more shadows of gray can be displayed, but still no colors or tough commands.
- Free 3G connectivity available all over the world, so you can easily get books wherever you might be, in just a couple of seconds
- native PDF reader, unlike the previous generations of Kindles
- Wi-Fi and built-in social applications (you can easily post on Facebook or Twitter)
- access to a huge library of books, newspapers, magazines and other types of written content
- millions of books written before 1923 are available for Free
Last but not least, the Kindle DX is now available for only $379. You can get it from here or see more details and pictures.

Kindle DX Graphite - same looks, better quality, smaller price
Of course, one question rests: is this ebook reader worth nearly 400 bucks when for only 500 you can get a tablet like the iPad with many other features and utilities? Well, if you’re an avid reader, i would say yes.
Especially because you get tons of free content and also very good prices on popular books, but also because it can be used outside, in strong light conditions and offers weeks of battery life on a single charge. So, the Kindle DX remains primarily a device meant for readers and it’s great at this job. For anything else though, look for a tablet.
