New VIA platform can easily play HD content
The folks at VIA have been always known for their low-consumption platforms, mainly used in smartbooks and such low-power mobile computers. However, while being energy efficient, these platforms used to offer kind of poor performances. Used to, because now VIA has a new platform, and it’s quite a kicker.
Sascha at netbooknews.de got to play with a test system equipped with a 1.2GHz Nano U3100 processor and VX900 graphics chipset with HD Chromation 2.0. It is able to play 1080p Full HD content smoothly, both self stored or Flash. And it does it better than the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator chip, supporting higher bitrate clips and offering a more pleasant and smoother experience, without any frame drops. And that while keeping CPU activity pretty low.
Check the video below for more details on this platform and a short comparison with an Atom netbook + HD Broadcom card.
Of course, I’m curios to see how will this platform perform in everyday activities with a proper OS installed, because there’s more to a computer than video capabilities.
This platform will be mainly seen on nettops and there’s no info on actual TDP right now. But VIA claimed they’ll also have netbooks built on it, so expect some nice devices to be launched in the next months on this VIA platform.
