Nvidia Tegra 3 platform to arrive in Q3 2011?

There were some rumors of a future Nvidia Tegra 3 platform mentioned in my post on the Notion Ink Adam tablet, when speaking about a future Adam 2 for late 2011. But it now seems these rumors seem to gather. There is still no official info from Nvidia on the matter, but various sources claim this new platform meant for compact multimedia gadgets will hit the market by mid-2011.

Now, for those of you not aware of this, the Tegra platform combines and ARM processor with graphic chips from Nvidia. It’s purpose is to power all kind of mobile devices, from smartphones to smartbooks and touchscreen tablets, providing good multimedia performance with low power consumption and affordable price.

There are still no technical details on the Nvidia Tegra 3, but like i said, expect some press releases from Nvidia in the near future. You can see info on the current Tegra 2 in this post.  What we know is that Nvidia’s Chief Executive, Mr. Jen-Hsun Huang, declared recently that the future of mobile devices belong to ARM configurations, hence their Tegra. I’m not going to argue with that, future will tell if he was wrong or right. However, you would have expected some noticeable products built on the previous Tegra and Tegra 2 generations. Well, that’s not actually the case.

In fact, the only reasonably famous product built on Nvidia Tegra and available right now is the Zune HD, but since this one only is available in the US and Canada, where competition from the iPod Touch is incredibly fierce, it did not manage to become the success Microsoft expected it to be. Although it does come with some strong points (I know, I own one).

As for Tegra 2, devices powered by this platform should start popping out soon. There are some planned, but I doubt we’ll see them this year, with most notorious being a couple of tablets, like the Notion Ink Adam, MSI Windpad 110 and Asus EEE Pad EP101TC.

All in all, if touch tablets will become as popular as predicted and awaited, we might seem a boom of products built on Tegra next year. Some voices even say the future Apple products will use it, so perhaps we’ll have it on an iPad 2? Still, it’s too early to tell. So let’s have a little patience, and stay tuned, I’ll keep my eyes on the Tegra subject and update once I find new interesting details.
