Samsung NB30 – a netbook for rough conditions

Although most netbooks are pretty solid built and reliable, handing them to your kids or using them outside, in rougher conditions, is not indicated. Samsung now has a better option, with their recently announced Samsung NB30 10 inch gadget. The device was showcased at CES and we have a couple of hands on impressions available from several online sources.

On the inside, there’s the standard hardware config for the new 2010 netbooks: Intel Atom N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 160 GB hard-drive, 10 inch matte display that can be used outside and an 11 hours battery. However, there are some extra goodies:

  • battery comes with a water-proof seal to prevent damage from liquids getting inside
  • HDD comes with anti-shock protection sensor and the entire gadget is meant to survive falls from up to 30 inches (around 70 cm)

But there’s more on the outside too: as you can reckon from the pictures, this Samsung NB30 in encased in rubberized cover that will offer protection from falls, damage, scratches and also provide better grip under wet conditions. And one more thing: keyboard is also specially designed to be water-tight.

So, it’s pretty obvious Samsung designed this netbook for outside usage. However, it’s not one of those extra sturdy computers you can hit with a shovel or run with a truck and still keep working, like Toshiba’s Toughbooks. But it is also way more affordable, as Samsung plans to sell their NB30 for $379 in US. Should be available online in the next couple of weeks.
