Starcraft 2 on Asus 1215N – does it work? (updated)

Hey guys. Some of you asked me if there’s any chance Starcraft 2 will run on the Asus 1215N, both in the review here on the site and also on the clips on Youtube. So, since I just recently got SC2 myself, I thought it would be cool to see if I could get the 1215N again for a couple of hours and give it a try.

Of course, I was not expecting to be able to run in on native resolution (1366 x 768) or with medium/high details. Still, I hoped it will run fine on 1024 x 768 with details turned all the way down, since this is after all on of the top gaming netbooks on the market.

See the clip below for yourself.

So, Starcraft 2 is playable on the 1215N at the moment. You only get around 15-20 fps on average in regular games (on 1280 x 720 px and medium details), which ain’t that fast multiplayer games or if you’re one of those click maniac players (aka PROs) :P Still, it is playable and you will be able to squeeze some extra 3-5 fps by dropping resolution and details.

Now, like I also said in the clip, the unit I have is a test one (although I’ve been reassured the hardware inside is final, but I do feel I have to point this aspect again). Also, with very few Ion devices on the market right now, drivers are still young so we should see updates soon from Nvidia and video performances will be enhanced. I had Nivida 257.41 drivers intalled, which were the latest I could get to work on this machine and are dated Middle of July 2010, so only a month old.

Still, we’ll see better in the next months, once the 1215N hits the big markets, so expect games to perform better (can’t say how much better though). Also see this other post with a couple of games I’ve tried on the 1215N (Including Anno 1404 and Modern Warfare 2), plus the complete review.

As always, feedback and reviews are appreciated.

MaximumPC did some tests with SC2 on different systems, including a Samsung N210 (N280 version)

    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/home/what_kind_machine_will_run_starcraft_ii_we_find_out

    And it got about 5FPS.

Perhaps Optimus is at fault here and it may not even be using the ION… Can you check to make sure ION is running during the game play and perhaps take a snapshot of CPU utilization?

is it possible for you to check “heroes of might and magic 5″ ? thanks !!!

Are you sure ION is the problem and not the CPU? In a big map the CPU has to perform a lot of work. If you can overclock the CPU a bit and you get a noticeable improvement in the FPS, the problem is the lack of CPU power.

The link posted by Zeo points in the direction of lack of CPU power: a laptop with a strong CPU and integrated graphics gets over 30 FPS at 1440×900 and Low settings.

Not sure what to say guys. The thing is that I don’t see how it could be possible not to have ION ON when in the game. That thing goes ON automatically, it’s not like I can control it in any way (at least I don’t know how).

Also, not sure what to say about CPU power. In tests this config got better scores than the ion + Atom 330, both in PCmark and 3DMark . So it should be faster.

I still tend to believe this is a drivers problem, as there are issues with outputting 1080p flash content as well. Also, this is a test version, maybe that has anything to do with these results too, although the guys at Asus say the hardware is indenctical to the one that will be available in stores. I have to say that i did not even try SC2 on other netbooks to see how it performs.

Anyway, I for one was very surprised myself with the results and I do hope things can improve with future drivers…

@Ariel Sry Ariel, I don’t own that game
@Zeo let me see if I can get those checked out. Don’t have the 1215N but I know the person who has it right now and I’ll try to ask him to get me those print-screens

OK guys, I got the 1215N for the weekend again. Could you help me with the exact number for the latest Nvidia Beta drivers that will work with this one? I will try to see if those can solve the problems on it…

It seems that you were actually right and the Nvidia GPU does not actually come online in SC2 (according to the test tools). Is there any way i can force it to always work?

Update: I’ve sorted it out and I’ll update the clip tomorrow. Disregard the one above

  • zeo

If you can update the drivers to 258.96 then it should give custom settings adjustment options…

  • http://www.netbooklive.com Mike

Got 257.41 now and things seem to work smoothly. Can’t get anything else working, did try 258.69 and 258.96 and no luck

Mike, just to let you know a similar problem as reported on the 1018P has turned up with 1215N users…

The new DDR3 systems may be really fickle on the RAM they will accept…

  • http://www.netbooklive.com Mike

Yeap, there are some comments about this in here: http://www.netbooklive.com/upgrade-memory-on-asus-1018p-and-asus-1215n-4595/ . I’m trying to get in touch with the guys at Asus but the one i know there is on break this week. Still, i doubt i will get anything else than what Asus already said: that they can’t guarantee every module will work, as they only tested some of them…

Well, it’s been a while. Has there been updated drivers to make the system run better playing MMO’s?
