The 9 Inch EEE PCs from Asus – netbooks’ history

Obviously, the biggest disadvantage of the first EEE netbook, is its display. Even if the 7 inch screen doesn’t bother you, with a 800×480 pixel resolution, you can’t really see an entire web page and you have a very tiny displaying area. Thus, the Asus solution was obvious. They’ve created 9 inch display EeePc laptops.

As you were assuming, the first model was EeePc 900. Well, on a 1024×600 pixel resolution screen, it’s way different. As for the internal memory, after playing with an EeePc 8GB, the built-in 20 GB SSD is like a breath of fresh air, although the Eee PC 8G microprocessor is unchanged, and the RAM is still 1 GB.

The most advanced model with a 9 inch screen is the EeePc 904HD. If you ever see a model with the suffix HA or HD for EeePC, it means it has a conventional hard disk. This is also EeePC 904HD’s story, with a 160 GB storage capacity. Another benefit is the 2GB of RAM, therefore we’re talking about almost a real notebook.

For the EeePC 904HD, they’ve even changed the Lithium Ion battery with a Lithium Polymer one, with a bigger autonomy, up to 4,6 hours. The sacrifice for it was that the weight had to raise up to 1.4 kg (2.8 lbs).

EeePC 904HD specifications:

  • Intel CPU & chipset – Intel Celeron M 353
  • Memory – 2GB DDR2 RAM
  • Storage – 160 GB HDD
  • Display – 8,9 inch, 1024×600 pixel
  • Connectivity – Wi-Fi, USB, VGA, card reader, LAN
  • Operating system – Linux
  • Accessories – 0,3 MPx webcam, stereo speakers and microphone

But, this was truly the first netbook that could replace your ordinary netbook. It wasn’t so well received though, and the standard soon moved to 10.1″ . But more about the 10 inches EEE PCs in the next episode.
