Touch tablets for only $199 – who knew they can also be affordable
With tablets expected to explode this year and with rumors of the imminent launch of Apple’s own touch tablet device, it seems these tablets are just the subject to follow right now.
However, if you want such a device, you won’t have to pay $1000 bucks (the rumored price for Apple’s thingie), you’ll also find decent devices for a lot less. Like the tablet just announced by Freescale Semiconductor, one that is predicted to hit the market by the middle of the year for just $199.
In terms of hardware, it will use one of Freescale’s platforms also found in some smartbooks these days, with a 1 GHz processor, along with 521 MB of memory and 64 GB of storage space (plus micro SD card extension). Display will only have 7 inch, but this will keep the overall product light and compact. It will surely be a touchscreen, but there’s no info whether it will also be capacitive or if it will come with multi-touch enabled.
In terms of connectivity, we should expect for Wi-fi N and Bluetooth on standard, plus 3G modem as an option. Pack all these and an Android/Linux based OS and you really get quite a winner, considering it will sell for only 200 bucks.

And what will you get for 200 bucks? A nice toy for online use, that will easily allow surfing, chatting, interacting with your friends via social tools, but also editing documents, pictures, via on-screen controls. And of course, music/video playing are present too.
Nobody had the chance to play with this Freescale tablet, but it is expected to appear on CES the next days, so we should find more about it soon.
