VIA tries to take a bite of Intel’s Atoms?

When I was telling you about what a netbook is, i mentioned that for some, netbooks are only the mini laptops powered by an Intel Atom processor. While that’s not entirely true, is understandable, as the vast majority of netbooks use Atoms at the moment (mainly the N270/N280 versions).

There are some other producers that try to impose their platforms, like AMD or VIA. The last ones recently announced their next series of low power CPUs, the VIA Nano 3000 . They should bring 40-50% performance increase over the current N270/N280 Atoms (will be able to play 1080 content easily) while consuming up to 20% less power than Current VIA Nano lines. Faster 800 Mhz FSB, SS4 and 64-bit support  and compatibility with latest operating systems (including Windows 7) are some of the other pluses.

The above are just what the folks from VIA claim right now, and as good as those might sound (and they do), we’ll still have to wait and see their actual products in action. Probably in first half of 2010. Also, don’t forget that Intel is updating the Atom line with the new to come PineTrail processors. So although VIA’s initiative sounds interesting, i for one really doubt we’ll see too many popular netbooks based on their chips. What do you think?
